FLUX 2009 – combined mobility at transport hubs

The jury chose the theme of "Combined Mobility at Transport Hubs" for 2009.

An overall increase in traffic volume – especially private motorized transport – has resulted in overcrowded roads and negative externalities in many places, with land use pressures, noise, greenhouse gas emissions, accidents and air pollution, all of which are incompatible with sustainable development goals. One solution to these problems involves the intelligent linking of the different methods of everyday transport and leisure transport: combined mobility. Optimum combinations of modes of transport are used for each route, depending on the situation and purpose. This helps to achieve goals such as winning new customer groups for transport companies, increasing the efficiency of the existing transport system and encouraging people to use environmentally friendly transport in line with the environmental policy.

Transfer points or transport hubs play a key role in the combined mobility concept. Smooth and attractive connections between all modes of transport, optimum connections to the various transport systems, standardized extra services (shops, bicycle and car repair services, etc.) and customer-friendly passenger and mobility information systems increase the attractiveness and popularity of combined mobility and promote a sustainable mobility culture.
