Dornach-Arlesheim
With connections to the S-Bahn, tram and six bus lines, Dornach-Arlesheim station is one of the key transfer hubs in the public transport network of the cantons of Basel-Landschaft and Solothurn.
Before the project was launched at the end of 2008, the connections between the different modes of transport were inadequate and awkward for passengers, owing to the peripheral location of the underpass and lack of signage.
Some passengers had difficulty getting on and off the transport, which was certainly not suitable for disabled passengers. In addition, buses had insufficient turning space, while the bus and Postbus stops were in poor condition with an unclear layout. Furthermore, public transport and private transport obstructed each other at the small station site and the tram turning loop (with a 12 m radius) was too short (resulting in high maintenance costs).
In late 2008, the project, which was subsidized by the urban planning project, was given the green light. The new stops, which are mostly covered, will be closer together in future and guarantee short and easy connections between services. In addition to the peripheral underpass, a new, central underpass links the two SBB platforms and adjacent areas of the town. The new design also takes combined mobility requirements into account: some 250 new bike stands have been positioned on the arterial roads on either side of the SBB tracks. Park & ride customers are offered a choice of 45 parking spaces, while the overall concept is rounded off by kiss & ride parking spaces and taxi ranks. The practical problems of the tram and bus services have also been resolved.
All transport users can enjoy an attractive and safe environment, thanks to the graceful, transparent and neutral architecture, as well as the creation of a signposted meeting zone in the station forecourt and adjacent streets.
The implementation of the development planned for the area to the west of the station (2010-2011), which is based on a private initiative, will give the area around the transport hub a further boost.
