AmiGo – autonomous driving

AmiGo is a new on-demand service from PostBus with autonomous vehicles. It is expected that from 2027, passengers in a defined area of Eastern Switzerland will be able to order a driverless vehicle via the app, which will take them directly to their destination. AmiGo complements the existing public transport system and is operated with electric vehicles.

After booking a journey conveniently via the app, you are picked up from your desired location and taken directly to your destination. For similar routes, journeys can be shared with other customers (ride pooling) to improve capacity utilization and reduce costs.

Passenger safety is the top priority. Before the launch, all roads in the area of deployment are mapped in detail. Safety drivers will be on board during the test phase. Only when all safety and quality requirements have been met can operations begin without an attendant. In addition, a control center monitors every vehicle around the clock and can intervene at any time.

To ensure data protection, an appropriate concept was developed as part of the project. We have taken suitable measures and are adapting them in the individual project phases. These include contractual agreements with vehicle manufacturers and external service providers, as well as anonymization of personal data directly on the cameras in the vehicles, which are checked continuously by means of in-house tests. In the current test phase in particular, we are checking and testing how the vehicles used collect, store and anonymize data (e.g. for video images during mapping runs). The project team is also in regular contact with the PostBus data protection coordinator and Swiss Post’s data protection officer.

If the vehicle experiences a technical problem, it carries out a “minimum risk manoeuvre”: it comes to a safe stop and informs the control center. Passengers can request assistance via an emergency button. A replacement vehicle will be sent if required.

No. AmiGo complements the existing public transport system, particularly during off-peak times or in areas that were previously less well served. The aim is to improve mobility – not to displace other services.

The first test drives with passengers are expected to take place in 2026 (with safety drivers). Regular operations without an attendant are planned for the beginning of 2027.

The exact prices have not yet been determined. The goal is an attractive and fair pricing model based on public transport fares. Before regular operations begin at the start of 2027, we will provide transparent information about the costs.
