We take the PostBus in the romantic town of Bremgarten, and from there we travel along the Reuss River to Jonen via the town of Unterlunkhofen. Flachsee Lake – close to the town of Unterlunkhofen – is a nature reserve of national importance. It was specially designed as a bird nature reserve, and attracts a whole host of water birds which breed and spend the winter there.
The protected Reuss section near the town of Unterlunkhofen not only attracts birds, it is also equally popular with walkers and visitors simply looking to relax. Flachsee Lake was formed in 1975 by the damming of the Reuss River during construction works on the Bremgarten-Zufikon hydroelectric power station. This 40-hectare habitat is now a breeding ground for 75 species of bird. This includes 11 endangered species on the “Red List”, such as the little ringed plover, the lapwing and the great reed warbler. Flachsee Lake is a welcome winter home for migrating birds from the north.
A nature trail takes you around the lake itself, allowing you to take in the idyllic nature reserve that is the Reuss valley. You will also find an observation point where you can watch nature unfold on the mudflats without disturbing it in any way. And if you are really lucky, you may even see the lapwing hunting. Information boards along the path explain the history of the landscape, and describe the typical plants and animals found in this wetland nature reserve.
