The Chäserrugg in Toggenburg is the mountain furthest east of the Churfirsten mountain range; which with its 2,262 meter-high summit provides a unique view of six countries. Correspondingly, it’s also an attractive tourist destination both in summer and winter - and easily reached from Unterwasser by funicular rail and the aerial cableway. And on reaching the top you’ll be fascinated by the summit building by the famous Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.
A number of diverse theme paths and circular trails to and around the Chäserrugg provide peak experiences for those who like to walk or go on a hike in summer. And numerous demanding hiking routes from sportive to classic await the more ambitious.
On the panoramic loop trail and on the flower trail at Rosenboden you will be able to enjoy a view of countless mountain peaks and the Walensee lake as well as unique nature sceneries. Several walks lead through a variety of alpine flora - and with a bit of luck you might catch a glimpse of the native ibex as well. Take a break at the restaurant on the top where gourmet culinary specialities are served.
The sound trail starting at Alp Sellamatt at the foot of the Churfirsten mountains is the ideal theme trail for the whole family. The original and playable sound installations are waiting to be discovered.
Myths and legends also come alive in Toggenburg on walking the “Sagenweg“ sayings path; with twelve exciting, short stories found at various stations along the route. A perfect path for children and pupils - on which they won’t be rearing to get to the end!
The Chäserrugg invites you to be on the move in a sportive sense even in winter. And views from the Rosenboden across to the Alpstein and Alvier massif, or down to Lake Walen, are equally as attractive at this time of year.
A day of skiing on the Chäserrugg is always a unique nature experience to top it! Many different slopes and routes are available for all levels of experience and all tastes, from the spectacular east descent to the 8.5 km long slope from the top to the village of Alt St. Johann. Try out the new spacious Stöfeli cable car: from up there, you might just spot some chamois or other indigenous wildlife.
Relaxing winter walks can be made on the circular Panoramarundweg trail; or the Rosenboden, Sagenweg and Höhenweg highland trail - but if you are in for more sporty adventure, your best bet is to equip yourself with snowshoes and explore the sprawling flats of Alp Sellamatt.
From Stöfeli to Unterwasser via Espel, there’s a sledge run descending across fields and around nice bends down to the valley. It is 5.4 km long and suitable for beginners as well as experienced sledging fans. Sledges can be rented with the ticket. Treat yourself to a break on the sun terrace of the new Espel pavilion built by Herzog & de Meuron!
The newly established summit building on the Chäserrugg convinces with a skillful merge of innovation and tradition; functionality and aesthetics. The sophisticated architecture of the building blends with the unique nature of the alpine foothills - thus permitting visitors wonderful panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. A fresh and tasty cuisine with lovingly prepared alpine style dishes provides the ultimate in pleasure-packed summit visits too!
