The Chäserrugg in Toggenburg is the mountain furthest east of the Churfirsten mountain range; which with its 2,262 meter-high summit provides a unique view of six countries. Correspondingly, it’s also an attractive tourist destination both in summer and winter - and easily reached from Unterwasser by funicular rail and the aerial cableway. And on reaching the top you’ll be fascinated by the summit building by the famous Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron.
A number of diverse theme paths and circular trails to and around the Chäserrugg provide peak experiences for those who like to walk or go on a hike in summer. And numerous demanding hiking routes from sportive to classic await the more ambitious.
On the panoramic loop trail and on the flower trail at Rosenboden you will be able to enjoy a view of countless mountain peaks and the Walensee lake as well as unique nature sceneries. Several walks lead through a variety of alpine flora - and with a bit of luck you might catch a glimpse of the native ibex as well. Take a break at the restaurant on the top where gourmet culinary specialities are served.
The sound trail starting at Alp Sellamatt at the foot of the Churfirsten mountains is the ideal theme trail for the whole family. The original and playable sound installations are waiting to be discovered.
Myths and legends also come alive in Toggenburg on walking the “Sagenweg“ sayings path; with twelve exciting, short stories found at various stations along the route. A perfect path for children and pupils - on which they won’t be rearing to get to the end!
The Swiss Landscape Conservation Foundation has selected the Chäserrugg/Toggenburg tourism infrastructure landscape as “Landscape of the Year 2021”. The prize honours soft tourism and a sustainable approach towards the landscape. A landscape that is worth exploring – again and again.
