The monastery of Claro is situated above the village. Nestled in the mountains amidst majestic chestnut trees, it is immersed in an ancestral silence. Walking up to this special place is a regenerative activity for both body and soul.
The district of Claro, part of the greater Bellinzona area, lies at the foot of the Pizzo di Claro. Located at the mouth of the Val Riviera, it occupies a strategic position, as evidenced by the discovery of Neolithic and Iron Age remains. Another precious testimony of the past is the famous Benedictine monastery of Santa Maria Assunta. From the PostBus stops "Claro, Ponton" or "Claro, Paese" it can be reached on foot in about thirty minutes, passing in front of the oratory of Sant'Ambrogio, which is also worth a visit, if only to admire the frescoes. The monastery, founded at the end of the 15th century, underwent a thorough restoration between 1998 and 2005. It houses a congregation of Benedictine nuns who live according to the rule of St. Benedict: "ora et labora" (pray and work). The silence that characterizes the daily life of the nuns can also be perceived outside the walls. The place inspires tranquillity and peace. If you take the mule track in the shade of the chestnut trees, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Val Riviera. A walk to the monastery certainly takes on a meditative and regenerative dimension.
