The San Bernardino pass is the starting point for an impressive descent of over 1,800 metres in altitude to Bellinzona in the warm Ticino region. The route firstly takes you through the Mesolcina valley, where you will hear Italian and feel the first hint of the South in the air. When you reach your destination, it is well worth visiting the old town of Bellinzona with its beautiful old town houses, churches and three castles (UNESCO World Heritage Sites). In former times, the imposing walls guarded the important trade routes.
