Eigenthal (Pilatus) Route

From Lucerne to the popular Eigenthal Valley

Postbuses on the Eigenthal route operate every day of the year with bus number 71. In Eigenthal, more than 100 hiking trails attract visitors to explore this unique landscape. In Kriens, the panoramic cable car whisks you off for an adventure on Mt. Pilatus in a mere 30 minutes. If the Postbuses on route 71 are too crowded, PostBus route 211 will take you to Eigenthal via Malters. The service is just as fast and, without the crowding, is even more pleasant.

The Eigenthal (Pilatus) Route (postbus route 71) travels from the Lucerne train station to the Eigenthal Valley at the foot of Lucerne’s Mount Pilatus. The direct route to the Eigenthal Valley takes no more than 30 minutes. Hop off the bus now and then to discover some highlights on the way. The connection via Malters is another alternative: take the train or S-Bahn from Lucerne to the Malters railway station, then continue with PostBus route 211 to Eigenthal.

Highlights

  • Enjoy a stroll through the picturesque old town of Lucerne, visit some of the city’s many points of interest and museums or take a ride on the lake in a paddle steamer (PostBus stop Luzern, Bahnhof).
  • A funicular railway starting in Kriens climbs up to Sonnenberg, an ideal destination for the whole family with fireplaces for grilling, playgrounds, adventure paths, and other attractions (PostBus stop Kriens, Busschleife).
  • From Kriens you can also get to the top of Mount Pilatus by gondola and cable car. If you look for action, head for the Pilatus Rope Park, the longest summer sledding run in Switzerland or the exciting Pilu-Land adventure playground. Artist Hans Erni created the Dragon Path based on the many legends surrounding Mount Pilatus. Enjoy the magnificent views from one of the generous sun-flooded terraces. Restaurant Bellevue and the historic Pilatus-Kulm mountain hotel beckon to stay and relax for a while.
  • Visit the baroque pilgrimage church in Hergiswald with its black Madonna and the painted ceiling (PostBus stop Hergiswald, Kirche).
  • The pristine scenery of the Eigenthal valley is best explored on foot or by mountain bike (PostBus stop Eigenthal, Talboden). In winter numerous cross-country ski trails for both classic and skate skiing are available for a healthy workout in the snow-covered valley.
