Hike from San Salvatore to Morcote
San Salvatore (TI) – high-altitude trail along chestnut trees
The hike goes from San Salvatore to Carona and then to Morcote.
The funicular takes you from Paradiso up to San Salvatore. Once at the top, a detour to the viewpoint is worthwhile. Lugano's local mountain offers a 360° panoramic view of Lugano, the lake and the alps. The hike begins just behind the mountain restaurant with a steep descent. But soon it evens out and the path leads through chestnut woods to Ciona. It then continues on to Carona and the San Grato botanical garden. This garden is famous for its unique rhododendrons which turn the park into a sea of flowers in spring. Shortly after Alpe Vicania, the path leads about 1200 steps steeply down to Morcote. The view is breathtaking. Shortly before the lakeshore, the church of Santa Maria del Sasso, built in the Renaissance style and later baroque style, towers over its surroundings. As you reach Morcote, you can relax in one of the inviting cafés.
