The hunger forts

An excursion that combines history and nature

The hunger forts, ancient military constructions, form an integral part of an educational trail just waiting to be discovered. They represent the ideal destination for anyone who wants to escape into nature for a few hours and learn some notions of history at the same time.

These lines of military defence were built in around 1855 at Camorino, just outside Bellinzona. Simply make your way uphill to understand the reason for the choice of location: it represents an ideal strategic point as the morphology of the land changes. Discover the educational trail of the hunger forts: during a peaceful walk across the hills, through forests and vineyards, you will have the opportunity to learn some interesting historical facts about the canton of Ticino whilst admiring magnificent views of the Magadino Plain and the whole Bellinzona area. Simply alight at the “Camorino, Villaggio” stop and follow the information signs that guide walkers along this fascinating two-hour route. Five hunger forts were built in this area: five towers with typical names in local dialect: Ai Scarsitt, Ai Munt, Ala Pélera, Al Sass dal Camósc and Al Pian di Bur. These works of art were constructed for military purposes to ward off a potential attack from the Austrians (which never came). They were given the name “hunger forts” or “hunger towers” by the local inhabitants. These towers, commissioned by the Confederation, gave them work and a source of income during this difficult period.
