From Magdenau monastery to Degersheim
Enjoy the views – immersed in peaceful stillness
Combine a relaxed hike from Magdenau to Degersheim with a visit of the famous Cistercian monastery. The lovely sceneries of north-eastern Toggenburg are ideal for an easy hiking tour and reward with a splendid view over the hills of the Hörnli region across to the Speer and the seven peaks of the Churfirsten, and further to the striking backdrop of the Alpstein.
From the Flawil train station, PostBus takes you to the starting point of your hike, the Magdenau monastery.
Hiking route, approx. 2.5 h
Starting at the Magdenau monastery, the hiking tour leads to Wittenberg and the Restaurant Moosbad. Signposted hiking trails then take you to Degersheim via Hinterruer and Wolfensberg. Alternatively, you can get to Degersheim via Baldenwil. Once you arrive you can either return by postbus to Flawil or by train to Herisau. The tour is also nice to do the other way around.
Magdenau monastery
About a dozen nuns of the Cistercian order live within the historic walls of the monastery. Its doors are open to guests, pilgrims, hikers, and seekers of rest and tranquillity on a regular basis.
Booking is required to participate in a comprehensive guided tour of the monastery’s church or the Magdenau Emblemzyklus. Round off your visit by popping in to the monastery shop offering local products.
