The Castello di Mesocco is a silent witness of time and a symbol of the strategic importance that the north-south connection has always had.
The Mesocco Valley is situated on the south side of the San Bernardino pass. This Italian-speaking part of the Grisons also has its very own cultural charm. If you are planning to take a PostBus ride to the Ticino or if you return from Switzerland’s sunniest region to the Grisons, be sure to stop here for a while.
Above Mesocco and to the south of the village, the ruins of the “Castello di Mesocco” are perched atop a rock. This was once the most important stronghold in the valley. Because of its strategically significant location, this striking spot in the Mesocco Valley was used as a fortress as far back as Roman times.
Another attraction and well worth a visit are the 15 thcentury frescoes in the church of Santa Maria del Castello situated at the base of the hill.
