Museum HAARUNDKAMM Mümliswil (Hair and comb museum)
Jewellery and decorative combs for crowned heads
The local history and tradition of comb-making comes to life again in the old comb factory in Mümliswil. The exhibition about hair and combs (HAARUNDKAMM) is dedicated to the comb as a useful and decorative object and to its manufacture. The exhibition also features pictures and exhibits about hairdressing fashions.
The only museum in Switzerland dedicated to combs documents the 200 year-old tradition of comb-making in Thal. Royalty, aristocrats and wealthy people all over Europe once adorned themselves with decorative combs from Mümliswil. In addition to the many interesting exhibits, there are also tools and documents from the former comb factory on display. The museum is a top-quality gem of cultural history.
The exhibit space was extended in 2014 to include a comb-making workshop. Here, various machines, devices and tools from the former comb factory have been staged in context. Comb-making sessions are also held in the workshop during which groups of visitors can create their own combs.
The museum is located on PostBus route Balsthal-Mümliswil (route 115) and has its own stop “Kammfabrik” right in front of the museum.
