Take the Napf–Romoos Route to explore the Napfberg area and its time-honored tradition of charcoal burning, the spectacular beauty of the UNESCO biosphere Entlebuch, and the magnificent panoramic views from Napf mountain, “the roof of the Emmental Valley”.
From Wolhusen, the Napf–Romoos Route takes you to Romoos, an ideal starting point for an excursion to Napf mountain.
In Wolhusen the ruins of the once proud “Äussere Burg” are situated in a popular and attractive recreational area featuring an educational path that tells you everything you ever wanted to know about forests. “Äussere Burg” is also located on a marked loop trail leading to the area’s main historic sites (PostBus stop Wolhusen, Railway Station).
Discover the beautiful Napf region, which is part of the UNESCO biosphere Entlebuch, on well-marked hiking trails. Visit the specialty dairy in Doppleschwand to taste the flavorful local cheeses (PostBus stop Doppleschwand, Post Office).
In Romoos the kids will have fun playing in the exciting Zyberliland nature park, a memorable experience for children and parents alike. Romoos is the only place left in Switzerland where charcoal is made by hand. Follow the Köhlerweg footpath from Romoos to learn more about the craft. You can even peek over the charcoal burners’ shoulders as they work. Tiny flecks of gold are dancing in the Fontanne river bed, ready to be panned (PostBus stop Romoos, Post Office). A beautiful walk through flowering meadows takes you up to Napf mountain, the highest viewpoint between the Emmental and the Entlebuch. Enjoy the splendid panoramic views of the Bernese Alps, the Jura mountains and across the Mittelland region. If you plan to visit the cozy mountain inn on the Napf remember that it can only be reached by foot or by mountain bike.
