Nidwalden Lake Route
Discover the beautiful heart of Switzerland’s origins
The Nidwalden lake route no. 311 takes you from Stans to the "cradle of Switzerland", the Rütli near Seelisberg. This ride opens up fabulous views of the magical lake Lucerne. Countless charming villages, historic sites and lakeshore esplanades with lovely restaurants make a stopover worthwhile.
PostBus operates daily and hourly between Stans and Seelisberg, offering an additional half-hourly service between Stans and Beckenried.
Your journey begins at the Stans train station.
The Stans town square is said to be the most beautiful in all of Switzerland. Take some time to discover Stans before getting on the postbus, there is much to see: the Winkelried monument and house, an airy ride on the worldwide first convertible cable car to the Stanserhorn peak with its magnificent panoramic views (PostBus stop Stans, Bahnhof) or just stroll through the alleys of the old town.
Enjoy the different leisure activities on the lake and along the lakeshore at Ennetbürgen and neighbouring Buochs. Those interested in culture will want to stop in Ennetbürgen and visit the openair Ennetbürgen Sculpture Park (Skulpturenpark Ennetbürgen) with an exhibition which is open all year round (PostBus stop Ennetbürgen, Post). The exhibition shows 50 sculptures by 46 artists.
You can then continue along lake Lucerne to Beckenried, a charming lakeside village where many restaurants with inviting terraces await you. Why not get to know some different aspects of the region on a trip by boat (PostBus stop Beckenried, Post), such as the Risleten gorge where you can admire waterfalls, swirls and impressive rocks.
From Beckenried, a cable car takes you up to Klewenalp in just a few minutes. On the ride up you will be able to enjoy the great views over lake Lucerne and the central Switzerland mountain ranges. In summer, Klewenalp is a paradise for paragliding, rock climbing, biking and hiking. There’s also a path suitable for strollers on Klewenalp leading to the Stockhütte in Emmetten.
In Emmetten there’s a cable car for 8 passengers to the Niederbauen where nature lovers can walk the wildlife observation trail (PostBus stop Emmetten, Post). The romantic mountain inn offers a variety of tasty specialities.
Seelisberg is situated high above Lake Lucerne in a beautiful sun-drenched area among flowering meadows and cool forests. Take a refreshing dip in the lovely lake just outside the village (PostBus stop Seelisberg, Geissweg). An historic funicular railway takes you back down to the shores of Lake Lucerne (PostBus stop Seelisberg, Railway Station). Legend has it that the Rütli meadow below the village is the birthplace of Switzerland.
