Salhöhe Route

Through the Basel countryside and the Solothurn region, the Salhöhe Route takes you from Gelterkinden to Salhöhe Pass past shady forests and mystical castle ruins.

The Salhöhe route takes you from Gelterkinden, in the Basel area, through the beautiful Jura landscapes with its hidden castle ruins to the Salhöhe Pass. Gelterkinden lies in the Ergolztal valley, nestled in wooded hills close to the ruins of Scheidegg castle.

The ruins of Farnsburg castle are located in Ormalingen. Adorning the buildings in Hemmiken are traces of the art of stone carving long practised in the village (PostBus stop: Hemmiken, village).

In Rothenfluh, explore a range of historical buildings such as the rectory and storehouse (PostBus stop: Rothenfluh, Hirschengasse). A historic boundary stone featuring the Habsburg and Basel coats of arms is evidence that the municipality bordered Austria until 1803.

There is a prehistoric solar calendar on the Rote Fluh mountain. The Talweiher bei Anwil nature reserve and its large pond and surrounding wet meadows are home to rare marsh plants and amphibian species (PostBus stop: Rothenfluh, Talweiher).

In the municipality of Kienberg you can explore the Alt-Kienberg and Heidegg castle ruins. The sinkholes above the old gypsum pit are also worth seeing (PostBus stop: Kienberg, Hirschen).

A magnificent view over the hills of Aargau Jura Park opens up on the Salhöhe Pass on the border between the cantons of Solothurn and Aargau (PostBus stop: Kienberg, Salhöhe). For some sustenance along the way, visit the Waldgasthaus Salhöhe.
