In the 19th century, no other place in the world made finer straw hats and works of art from threshed grain than the Freiamt region of Aargau. The Straw Museum recounts this history in an entertaining way.
The Straw Museum in Wohlen takes the public on a fascinating journey through the history of the Freiamt straw hat industry. Its beginnings were humble, as a rural handicraft in the 18th and 19th centuries. With the industrial revolution, the straw hat became a mass product and top export. No other region in the world produced finer straw hats than Freiamt in the 19th century. But with the decline of industry starting in the 1970s, the once flourishing industry began to wither.
The splendid museum is located in the former villa of the straw manufacturer August Isler, which was built in the 1860s and is surrounded by a well-tended park with ancient trees. Its collection is presented in a modern, multi-media and interactive way with countless exhibits. Children aged between 5 and 9 can explore the Straw Museum on a special, age-appropriate tour through the exhibits.
