Take the Vals Route from Ilanz to Vals to discover the Vals Valley, an outpost of the Walser culture in a Romansh-speaking region. A visit to the modern thermal baths in Vals is well worthwhile at any time of the year.
Starting out from Ilanz, the Valser line takes you up the Val Lumnezia to the Valsertal valley with its typical Walser farm settlements of St. Martin and Vals. Some of them are still used for traditional pasture activities.
The Vals spa offers a deeply relaxing experience with a range of baths and impressive spa infrastructure (PostBus stop: Vals, Therme). But it’s much more than “just” a wellness experience – the spa is a listed building and a masterpiece of aesthetics, lighting and timeless elegance. Architect Peter Zumthor knew how to set the stage for this place of natural power.
Vals is also a great destination for hikers. We recommend the panoramic path via Frunt to Zervreila. In Frunt, make sure you visit the beautifully preserved St. Anna chapel (Sankt Anna Kapelle). By the deep blue waters of the idyllic Zervreila reservoir, you can enjoy some wonderful hikes with views of the majestic Zervreilahorn, also known as the “Matterhorn of Graubünden”, and enjoy a break at the Zervreila restaurant near the dam (PostBus stop: Vals, Zervreila). During the summer season, the Postbus takes you from Zervreila back to Vals.
Routes operate all year round between Ilanz, Bahnhof and Vals, Post.
Ilanz is a charming town with historic buildings and medieval fortifications. It is the gateway to the monumental Rhine Gorge (which you can enjoy on a hike or a river rafting tour, for example). Learn about the local culture in the Museum Regiunal Surselva in Ilanz or the history of the Walser people in the Heimatmuseum Gandahus (PostBus stop: Vals, Post).
