Take the Vals Route from Ilanz to Vals to discover the Vals Valley, an outpost of the Walser culture in a Romansh-speaking region. After an active day of hiking or skiing, relax in the modern Vals thermal baths.
The Vals Route takes you from Ilanz through Val Lumnezia up to Vals Valley with the Walser settlements of St. Martin and Vals. In Ilanz you will see fascinating old patrician houses and medieval town fortifications. Ilanz is also the gateway to the monumental Rhine Gorge which can be explored on foot or on a river rafting trip. Learn all about the regional culture in the Regiunal Surselva Museum (PostBus stop Ilanz, Plazza Cumin).
Hotel Bad Peiden is a reminder of the times when many guests came to Peiden because of its rich mineral springs (PostBus stop Peiden, Bogn). In the original Vals Valley, you will find typical Walser settlements with stone roofs. The region is a hikers and mountaineers paradise. Vals village also offers a small but excellent ski area (PostBus stop Vals, Post Office, change to ski bus) and a wonderful thermal spring (PostBus stop Vals, Thermal Baths). To find out more about the history of the Walser people, visit the Gandahus museum (PostBus stop Vals, Post Office). The deep-blue lovely Zervreila reservoir is a starting point for magnificent hikes offering views of the striking Zervreilahorn, “the Matterhorn of the Grisons”. Restaurant Zervreila near the dam is a great place to stop and rest (PostBus stop Vals, Zervreila).
