Winter hiking in the Saas Valley
Discovering the Saas Valley
Take the pleasant winter hiking path through the Saas Valley to discover the attractions and the typical villages of the region.
The holiday destination Saas-Fee / Saas Valley is a veritable outdoor and panorama paradise. No less than eighteen 4000-meter peaks are surrounding the beautiful Saas Valley, offering a variety of winter sports activities.
If you prefer a leisurely walk instead of a high-mountain tour, the winter hiking path through the Saas Valley is perfect for you. For the most part, the path follows the cross-country ski trail. It takes about two and a half hours to get from Saas-Balen to Saas-Almagell or vice versa. In any case, it offers a whole lot of regional charm.
The path starts at the village square in Saas-Balen and leads in the direction of the round church, the first attraction along the way. The chapel Mariä Himmelfahrt, built in 1812, is under landmark protection and the only one of its kind in Switzerland. The fantastic panoramic views to the south in the direction of Saas-Grund, including the Fellbach waterfall to the left of the church, are part of a beautiful natural spectacle. Continue along the banks of the Saaser Vispe to Bidermatten, Tamatten, Saas-Grund, Unter den Bodmen and finally to Saas-Almagell, the southern-most village in the sunny Saas Valley. The home of former ski champion Pirming Zurbriggen features old barns, a peaceful environment and many charming spots to linger and explore until the postbus takes you back to Brig or Visp.
A perfect day trip for those who love the quiet, magical side of winter. It is an easy hike and a pleasure for the whole family.
