Your excursion to Mund and Finnen

Discover the red gold from Mund

The saffron village of Mund is ideally positioned for the sun and is located 1,200 metres above sea level, on the right-hand side of the Rhône Valley and in the center of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn.

Travel to us by Postbus in just 15 minutes from the Brig-Glis-Naters conurbation. We can offer you an outstanding recreation area. As the ideal starting point for hikes, cycling and snowshoe tours, we are proud of the many guests and sightseers who visit us. Hike through magnificent forests and walk alongside the fascinating irrigation channels in the romantic and wild Gredetsch Valley. Rustic hamlets that have retained their ancient Valais style of architecture and Maiensäss pastures invite you to linger. And you’ll encounter black-faced sheep, blackneck goats and the famous Hérens and Simmental cattle.

Or discover the neighbouring village of Finnen, which is approximately 30 minutes away from Visp by Postbus. A detour to Finnen is not to be missed – thanks to its exposed location facing south-west, it delivers fantastic views of the Rhone Valley and the four-thousand-metre peaks of the Saas and Matter Valleys. A two-hour hike will then bring you from Finnen to the village of Mund, famous for its saffron.

Activities in Mund

  • Saffron museum and village tour: A tour through the saffron village of Mund is a real experience for every visitor. You’ll visit the unique saffron museum in a tour lasting around an hour.
  • Saffron educational trail: Take the opportunity to get to know the “red gold” in a fun way. The Mund saffron educational trail will lead you through the only area that cultivates the spice in Switzerland. Besides interesting facts and background information, you can enjoy our attractive natural landscape along the way.
  • Hiking: In the summer, many hikers are attracted to the Brischeru alp, with its breathtaking panoramic views and mighty larches at 2,200 metres above sea level. Heading west, you’ll then head into Baltschieder Valley to the Hohnalpa, Ebnet and Eril alps.
In the east, the unspoilt Gredetsch Valley awaits, where you’ll find grazing cattle, sheep and goats in the summer. In spring and particularly in the autumn, when the larches turn golden, the Sal forest and its neighbouring hamlets become a paradise. Hiking
  • Attraction: One of our attractions is the Gstein hermitage. This is accessible from Mund through the hamlet of Warbflie, but can also be reached from the valley communities of Lalden and Brigerbad. The hermitage is hidden beneath a hefty, protruding chunk of rock. An eight-metre high wooden cross on the rock indicates the location of the chapel of mercy. It commemorates a vision of the Virgin Mary in 1857.
