The showcase of the world-renowned, spicy Appenzeller Cheese® is nestled in the midst of a hilly idyllic landscape. The Postbus route 180 takes you almost to the dairy’s door. Marvel at the remarkable cheese cellar, where up to 12,500 wheels of cheese are stored. Take a fascinating look inside the cheese vat (emptied for the final time at 3 p.m.).

What you can look forward to at the Appenzeller show dairy:

  • Public tours: every Wednesday and Sunday at 2 p.m.
  • “Schauchäsi Stobete” event: every first Sunday in the month from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Breakfast buffet: every Sunday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.
  • Large children’s play area
  • Show dairy shop with large cheese counter, regional products, gifts and souvenirs
  • Quaint wooden decor, pictures from olden times and an authentic cheese vat: the cosy and welcoming Marktplatz, Höckli and Kessi restaurants serve warm food all day.

Views of Appenzell’s hilly landscape

A visit to Stein AR can ideally combined with a gentle hike over the Ganggelibrugg bridge. The quaint rows of houses in Stein AR give way to magnificent views of Appenzell’s hilly landscape and the Alpstein range. The route passes Schlössli Haggen via Bruggli–Ganggelibrugg, before heading towards St. Gallen Haggen. The Ganggelibrugg bridge, constructed in 1936/37, spans the river Sitter at a height of 99 metres and is 355 metres long.
