Thurgau – clear view from observation towers

Enjoy spectacular views of lakes and mountains! The various observation towers in Thurgau offer magnificent vistas over the canton, Lake Constance and the Alps. The Stählibuck, Napoleon, Wildensbuch beacon and Gewerbeturm Amriswil towers are all situated in the vicinity of Postbus stops.

A number of observation towers in Thurgau provide superb panoramic views in good weather conditions. With incredible views over Thurgau, Lake Constance and as far as the Alps, the journey between the towers is worth your while. The ages of the towers are just as varied as their structures. What’s more, each tower is just a few minutes on foot from the nearest PostBus stop. Packing binoculars and a camera is highly recommended if visibility is good!

Stählibuck tower

The “Stählibuck” observation tower is found on Frauenfeld’s local mountain. At 27 metres high, visitors can climb the 148 steps to enjoy magnificent views over Vorarlberg to the east and as far as the Bernese Alps in the west. The tower, built in 1908, is one of the oldest steel-framed towers in Switzerland. During the Second World War, it was used by the Swiss army as an aircraft observation post. Secluded barbecue areas at the foot of the tower are ideal for picnics.

To reach the tower, travel from Frauenfeld or Weinfelden to the stop Dingenhart, Stählibuck.

Napoleon tower, Hohenrain

The Napoleon tower, which was rebuilt in 2019, is located in the hamlet of Hohenrain near Wäldi. The original tower was constructed by Louis Napoleon III 200 years ago. The elegant timber structure stands at a height of over 30 metres, and visitors can discover the region’s history while climbing its 200 steps. Out of consideration for local residents, it is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

To reach the tower, travel from Kreuzlingen or Frauenfeld to the stop Wäldi, Dorfplatz.

Gewerbeturm Amriswil

The Gewerbeturm Amriswil tower was built by the local trade association in 2012. The 30-metre-high tower with 90 steps is made entirely from spruce and larch. The platform provides wonderful views of the Alps and Lake Constance.

The tower is located 10 to 15 minutes from the Amriswil, Mühlebach stop.

Wildensbuch beacon observation tower

On a hill above Wildensbuch, the observation tower soars to a height of 37 metres. After climbing the 186 steps, visitors are rewarded with views over the Zurich wine country, the Randen mountains, the Hegau, Lake Constance and as far as the Alps. Timber from four Douglas fir trees was used for the main structure of the tower, which was officially opened in 2010.

To reach the tower, travel from Marthalen or Schlatt TG to the stop Wildensbuch, Dorf.

Fabelweg Trail – a stunning natural experience in a fairy-tale setting

18 stations guide you along a path into the world of fairy tales. With its spectacular views over the Lake Constance region, this trail is ideal for families with children. Furry fairy-tale animals introduce themselves with their stories, accompanied by quiz questions and suggestions for games. There are also group tasks, such as making up excuses and piggyback racing. As you make your way along the trail, you will find two barbecue and picnic areas. The return journey from Ermatingen to Steckborn can be travelled by boat or train.
