Postbus journey towards Mattmark

Travelling there

You can reach Saas-Fee on PostBus route 511 from Visp (stop: Saas-Fee, Busterminal). The journey takes 54 minutes and is a highlight in its own right: along the way, you’ll discover numerous attractions, the mountain villages of Saas and a breathtaking view of the surrounding four-thousand-metre peaks.

See the marmots

After your arrival in Saas-Fee, make a small stop at the tourist office to buy some marmot feed (price: CHF 6). After that, you can walk to the Spielboden valley station in around 10 minutes. The cable car will transport you to the Spielboden (2,448 m above sea level), where you can feed the tame marmots.

On the Spielboden, you can set off on the 45-minute circular trail featuring the amusing Eddie the marmot. Seven boards provide you with fascinating information about the marmots’ lives.

Kreuzboden Saas-Grund

On the Kreuzboden, located at 2,400 metres above sea level and overlooking Saas-Grund, you can go hiking, biking or simply enjoy the wonderful panorama by the mountain lake. Children can have fun on rafts or at the water park, explore Kreuzboden Adventure Land or visit the animals at the petting zoo. Small go-karts are also available free of charge. The Kreuzboden can be reached via a comfortable eight-minute journey on the Saas-Grund cable car.

If you’d like even more action, you can travel back to Saas-Grund on a Monster Scooter.

 
A breather at the Mattmark Reservoir

Mattmark Dam Reservoir – a place of natural power

The Mattmark Dam is Europe’s largest earth dam and can be found in the south of the Saas Valley. The reservoir, which is used to produce electricity, is a place of natural power that intrigues visitors – not only for its technical details, but also for its picturesque setting. The dam is made mainly of glacial till, measuring 343 m wide at the bottom and 780 m in length. The crest of the dam is located at an altitude of 2,204 m. You can walk and bike around the reservoir, or simply stroll along the top of the dam. There are now direct PostBus routes running from Saas-Fee to Mattmark between 10 July and 24 September 2023.

Coffee and cake at Restaurant Mattmark

Restaurant Mattmark is the perfect place to take a rest with a coffee and delicious homemade cake. If you have a taste for fine food, you’re sure to feel at home in the Saas Valley, with its numerous restaurants offering culinary delicacies. One of the unforgettable events on offer is the Nostalgic Culinary MileTarget not accessible, which will turn back the clock and present authentic dishes from yesteryear on 10 September 2023.

On each via ferrata, the Saas Valley can be seen from a new angle with an impressive panorama.

Other activities

The Saas-Fee/Saas Valley holiday region has yet more activities to offer in the summer, with enticing four-thousand-metre peaks, via ferrata routes, hiking paths and biking trails. Numerous top eventsTarget not accessible will be taking place again this summer in the Saas-Fee/Saas Valley holiday region. The SaasFeestival is a highlight in July and August, with concerts by Florian Ast, Nickless, Dada Ante Portas and many other acts. All concerts are free of charge and take place outside.

Tip: mountain railways and Postbuses are included free of charge after your first night’s stay in the Saas Valley!
