30 year anniversary of PostBus route Lucerne–Rotkreuz
News dated 22 September 2016
A 30-year anniversary is usually not a reason for a big celebration, but in connection with the 2016 Year of Public Transportation of the Canton Lucerne, the 30th anniversary of the PostBus route Lucerne–Rotkreuz fits in perfectly.
Although a postal route with a one-horse carriage was introduced as early as 1877 between Lucerne and Udligenswil, the first bus on the same route was not available until 1925. A horse-drawn carriage was also used between Rotkreuz and Meierskappel from 1898 to 1925, but it was discontinued at the time the Meierskappel railway station opened.
Then it took more than 60 years until the village of Meierskappel was made accessible with a direct bus from both Lucerne and Rotkreuz. On 28 September 1986, for the first time, Udligenswil was no longer the final stop. Of the 20 connections between Lucerne and Udligenswil nine buses continued to Rotkreuz.
The route has continually expanded since then. The increase in the number of passengers affected the size of the vehicles and the number of departures. While only about 50 people fit into the Saurer and FBW buses in the 1980s, the modern Mercedes and MAN postbuses of today have room for up to 120 passengers. Meanwhile, there are 48 departures between Lucerne and Udligenswil from Monday to Friday and 31 of these buses continue to Rotkreuz.
Various changes in the timetable, the stops and the route from Adligenswil have resulted in discussions among the passengers along the route in the past few years. It was found that many people identify with Route 73, as it is called today, and they use public transportation for their travels. Many of the needs of commuters, students, occasional travellers and sightseers of all ages can be met, but it’s unlikely that the operations will ever be able to satisfy all requests. The ability to transfer to the train in Lucerne and Rotkreuz makes these services even more practical.
However, the number of passengers clearly shows that the utilization rate has increased. With around 1.65 million passengers per year, the Luzern-Adligenswil-Udligenswil-Meierskappel-Rotkreuz line is currently the most widely used PostBus route in Central Switzerland. Together with the authorities of the communities and the Canton Lucerne PostBus is already contemplating the planning of further improvements. The implementation depends on the financing possibilities of the public sector, but the best argument continues to be the growing passenger numbers – and who knows whether the 2-million passenger threshold may not be exceeded in a few years.
