WiFi available on Postbuses until the end of 2026

The number of users of free WIFI in Postbuses is falling, and WIFI is no longer required for operation. As the financing will also change, PostBus will continue to offer this service until the end of 2026.

Since 2012, there has been free WIFI in Postbuses. At the time, PostBus was the first major public transport company in Switzerland to offer this service to passengers. Passengers now mostly and increasingly have flat-rate mobile phone subscriptions. Most visitors from abroad also purchase data transfer roaming packages before travelling to Switzerland. As a result, user numbers are declining steadily and have halved over the past five years. Just under 5 percent of PostBus passengers currently use free WIFI.

WiFi in Postbuses was also used on drivers’ tablets: operational processes are communicated via tablets. These electronic devices now run directly via the mobile network, making WIFI in vehicles unnecessary from an operational perspective. The Federal Office of Transport (FOT) and the cantons previously financed WIFI in regional passenger transport (RPT) because it was necessary for operation. WIFI as a pure passenger service, on the other hand, is not supported, which means that PostBus would now have to pay the costs itself in full. This expenditure of several hundred thousand francs a year is disproportionate to the requirements.

The pressure on public transport costs is increasing. For this reason, the PostBus Executive Board has decided to discontinue the WIFI service from 2027. However, despite the sharp decline in user numbers, PostBus did not take the decision lightly and would like to thank passengers for their understanding. New vehicles are already on the road without a WIFI infrastructure. By the end of 2026, however, free WIFI will still be fully available in most of the vehicle fleet.
