From February 2026, PostBus will be putting five electric buses into service in the Mendrisiotto region. The five fossil fuel-free vehicles will mainly be used on public transport routes 517 Mendrisio–Genestrerio–Novazzano–Chiasso and 523 Mendrisio–Novazzano–Chiasso–Stabio–Gaggiolo.

A clean and silent ride

Three of the new electric vehicles are 12-meter-long Solaris Urbino buses, which can accommodate 32 seated and 38 standing passengers and are equipped with the usual facilities; each bus is fitted with batteries that provide total power output of 320 kWh. Another two 10-meter MAN vehicles can accommodate up to 68 seated and standing passengers; the battery capacity is 275 kWh.

The five new Postbuses are not only all fossil fuel-free, but also offer an impressively silent and smooth ride. This benefits not only passengers and drivers, but also the residents of the areas served by PostBus routes.

The introduction of these five electric Postbuses in the Mendrisiotto region enables annual savings of 104,200 liters of diesel, preventing 266 tons of CO2 emissions.

The infrastructure in Mendrisio

PostBus will recharge the buses in the depot of Imprenditore Autopostale del Mendrisiotto SA, where the required charging infrastructure has been installed in recent months: two 150 kW charging stations, each with 3 charging points. The charging system will be expanded when the next electric vehicles are introduced.

PostBus intends to gradually convert the entire fleet to alternative drive systems, and the electrification of the fleet will also continue in Ticino in the coming years. As the main road transport company in the Swiss public transport sector, PostBus is leading by example and living up to its particular responsibility by converting the vehicle fleet to alternative drive systems.
