From Meiringen, the Rosenlaui route takes you to the Rosenlaui valley. Following in Goethe’s footsteps, it takes you past the unique glacier gorge up to the hamlet of Schwarzwaldalp and on to the Grosse Scheidegg mountain pass, where the peaks feel close enough to touch.

Hikes

There are a some beautiful hikesTarget not accessible starting from Schwarzwaldalp. As early as 1779, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe discovered the beautiful Rosenlaui valley as he hiked across the Grosse Scheidegg pass. You will reach the Grosse Scheidegg pass via Alpiglen and a mountain trail leads to the First mountain station.

Rosenlaui glacier gorge

On the way to Schwarzwaldalp, you will pass the famous Rosenlaui glacier gorgeTarget not accessible. Here, the water roars through narrow crevices and mystical caves. There is a footbridge where you can take your time to enjoy the rugged beauty of the gorge.

Cultural attractions

There are a number of historically and culturally significant sights to be seen along the Rosenlaui route. In Meiringen, you will find the Sherlock Holmes MuseumTarget not accessible, with its recreation of the English master detective’s study. The faithfully reproduced Reichenbachfall FunicularTarget not accessible is worth a trip, and not only for Sherlock Holmes fans. At the Belle Epoque Hotel Rosenlaui, every nook and cranny is marked by its history and spending the night there is just as it used to be all those years ago. The old Schwarzwaldalp sawmill is also well worth a visit.

Cuisine

The region also offers a wide range of culinary highlights. Meiringen, for example, is considered the birthplace of that snowy egg white delicacy, the meringue. Winter activities

A legendary, fast-paced 5.5-kilometre stretch of toboggan run takes you from the Grosse Scheidegg pass down to Schwarzwaldalp. The Postbus takes you conveniently from Meiringen to Grosse Scheidegg. From Schwarzwaldalp, there are also two snowshoe hiking trailsTarget not accessible running through the beautiful Rosenlaui valley.
