The fringe benefit
PostBus employees are generally entitled to travel discounts (e.g. GA Travelcard or Half Fare Travelcard). Retired PostBus employees and family members can also benefit from this.
Entitlement to the staff travel discount GA Travelcard, which is valid in the same way as a commercial (normal) GA Travelcard, depends on the employment relationship and employment level.
Anyone working for a PostBus operator should contact their line manager about their entitlement to a staff travel discount.

Staff travel discount entitlement for employees
Employment level of 40% or above
- Free GA Travelcard
- Entitlement to the additional offer for family members*
Employment level of 20−39%
- Free Half Fare Travelcard
- Discount on GA Travelcard
- No entitlement to the additional offer for family members
Employment level of less than 20% or hourly wage
No entitlement to travel discounts
* If the staff travel discount GA Travelcard is waived, family members (spouse and children) cannot purchase travelcards via the staff travel discount service.
Staff travel discount entitlement for retired staff and family members
Retired employees, family members, widows and widowers benefit from a discount of 35% on a staff travel discount GA Travelcard compared to a commercial GA Travelcard.
Under certain conditions, retired staff and family members will be granted a continuation of their existing entitlements and thus a 50% discount after 1 January 2024.
Continuation of existing entitlements
Continuation of existing entitlements means that specific benefits remain valid after the change to the discount system. The discounts received can continue to be used under the following conditions:
Conditions for continuation of existing entitlements for family members and retired staff (excluding children and young people)
Staff travel discount GA Travelcard
- Family members and retired staff who hold a valid GA Travelcard on 31 December 2023 will continue to receive a discount of 50% on the commercial GA Travelcard prices.
- The prerequisite for this is that the staff travel discount GA Travelcard is always renewed without a break.
Staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard
- The staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard remains free of charge for family members and retired staff who hold a valid staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard on 31 December 2023.
- The prerequisite for this is that the staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard is always renewed without a break.
Conditions for continuation of existing entitlements for children and young people
Staff travel discount GA Travelcard
For children and young people born in 2015 or earlier
- A 50% discount on the commercial GA Travelcard continues to apply.
- This also applies to children/young people in the care of new employees, regardless of whether or not they previously held a GA Travelcard.
Staff travel discount GA Travelcard
For children and young people born in 2016 or later
A 35% discount on the commercial GA Travelcard applies.
Staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard
For children and young people born in 2015 or earlier
The staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard is still free of charge.
Staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard
For children and young people born in 2016 or later
The staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard is issued with a 35% discount.
Changing a travelcard
Changing the class or type of travelcard
If the class or type of travelcard is changed (e.g. from staff travel discount GA Travelcard Familia Adult to staff travel discount GA Travelcard Duo), continuation of your existing entitlement is guaranteed; this also applies when switching from the staff travel discount GA Travelcard to the staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard.
Switch from a staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard to staff travel discount GA Travelcard
If you switch from a staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcard to a staff travel discount GA Travelcard, your entitlement will not continue. New staff travel discount GA Travelcards will be issued with a 35% discount. If you are changing travelcard, the staff travel discount GA Travelcard must be ordered by 31 December 2023 at the latest, with the first date of validity on 31 December 2023 in order to ensure that your entitlement continues.
Employees who retire on or after 1 January 2024
All employees who retire on or after 1 January 2024 will receive a discount of 35% on the commercial price (no continuing entitlement). We would like to point out that early renewal or retroactive issuing of staff travel discount Half Fare Travelcards is not permitted.
