Splügen Pass Route

Splügen–Monte Spluga–Chiavenna

On the Splügen Pass Route, a blue bus of the Italian STPS line will take you from Splügen village across Splügen Pass to Valle San Giacomo and finally to Chiavenna, where you have PostBus connections to Lugano and St. Moritz.

An exciting ride on the Splügen Pass Route takes you from Splügen to Valle San Giacomo in Italy and to Chiavenna where you can connect to a post bus to St. Moritz or Lugano. A passport or identity card is required to cross the border.

Delve into Splügen’s past as a transit stop in the Rheinwald local history museum (PostBus stop Splügen, Post Office). Splügen, situated at the foot of Splügen Pass and San Bernardino Pass, was awarded the Wakker Prize for its well-preserved village center where proud mansions with southern flair stand side-by-side with sunburned Walser houses. The STPS bus climbs up the winding road to Splügen Pass which offers fantastic views (bus stop Splügen Pass, Berghaus). Historic lodgings and guesthouses in Monte Spluga also bear witness to the old trading route across the pass (bus stop Monte Spluga). The ride continues through Valle San Giacomo to the small but long-established Madesimo winter resort (bus stop Madesimo). Above Isola, the culturally significant ViaSpluga hiking trail leads through the impressive Cardinell Gorge, which is easily passable on foot (bus station Isola (Italy), Village). The old town of Chiavenna is a great place for a leisurely stroll (PostBus stop Chiavenna, Railway Station). Visit the Museo del Tresoro, Parco Paradiso and Mulino di Bottonera while you are there.
